Conducting John conducted the Durham University Symphony Orchestra from 1999-2000 and programmed works by, among others, Stravinsky, Wagner, Arnold, Britten, Gershwin and Adams. He established an early music group at Southampton University for the 2000-2001 season, leading performances of Machaut, Janequin, Finnissy and Barges. From January 2002 to September 2003 John was the musical director of CoMA Yorkshire, leading the ensemble in performances in Huddersfield, Nottingham and at the TATE Gallery in Liverpool. During his time with them, the performers developed their ensemble playing technique, especially in improvisation and the interpretation of more open scores. Together they performed the music of, among others, Ives, Cage, Reich, Riley, Cardew and Wolff. In December 2004 John directed the CoMA South Ensemble in a collaboration with the Gantry Youth Theatre and Southampton City Art Gallery. John is currently Guest Director of the Huddersfield Peoples' Choir. |
